- Tips

  • REFERENCE. Please use reference and find ones that inspire you.
  • Start with a foundation base coat of color, I would recommend a shade of purple.
  • Be bold when painting on the light and avoid shadow regions.
  • Be Patient. Especially when layering or doing repetition.

- Instructor Notes

This is a fun exercise since we are working with flat angular shapes, which is easier to show lighting on than rounder objects. You just have to keep in mind the direction of the lighting and if the angle of your shape would receive the light, lay it on! This technique of "painting on the light" is a simple one to create form very quickly and helps teach how to add value without excessive shading or using gradients. When you finish the exercise, remember to submit the result to the "Submissions" tab near the top of this exercise. You can see other submissions alongside your own!

Everyday is a rededication. I love nothing more than drawing and helping others deepen their understanding of working with art. I proudly rooted myself in Wisconsin and have worked with CG Cookie for 4 years and started Concept Cookie when I was first brought on. Now I enjoy the weekly livestreams and the community that has built up since.
